Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a medical treatment that relies on machinery to monitor and visualize brain activity, and is used to help a variety of conditions such as emotional disturbances, attention-deficit disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Neurofeedback technicians are responsible for understanding the machinery involved in neurofeedback, as well as collaborating with patients to effectively address and treat the concern for which they are seeking treatment.

Following the initial brain mapping assessment, neurofeedback technicians administer neurofeedback treatment. During neurofeedback treatment, the technician places electrodes on the patient's scalp, similar to the brain mapping procedure, to collect brain wave data. Brain waves are translated into images and sounds via computer. The patient and the technician collaborate during the treatment process to view and listen to the brain activity. The technician suggests thoughts for the patient to think about to show the patient changes in brain activity when he has certain thoughts or is exposed to stress, and provides suggestions to help the patient change brainwave activity. Technicians usually meet with their patients on a weekly basis, but treatment may occur more frequently if deemed necessary.

Child and Family Therapy

Child therapy helps children and adolescents in a variety of ways. They receive emotional support, resolve conflicts with people, understand feelings and problems, and try out new solutions to old problems. Goals for therapy may be specific (change in behavior, improved relations with friends or family), or more general (less anxiety, better self-esteem). The length of psychotherapy depends on the complexity and severity of problems.

The relationship that develops between the therapist and the client is very important. The child or adolescent must feel comfortable, safe, and understood. This type of trusting environment makes it much easier for the child to express his/her thoughts and feelings and to use the therapy in a helpful way.

Family therapy is designed to address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family, such as major life transitions or mental health conditions. It may be used as the primary mode of treatment or as a complementary approach. Families are seen as an integrated, interconnected unit in which psychological functioning is influenced by each and every family member individually and collectively as an entire system.
